Sour for the Summer: Tangerine Dreams

Hot summer nights and cold summer beers go perfectly together don’t they?

This weekend I shared a few stoop beers with friends, and boy, we picked a great one! After a day of errands in the sun, Powell Brewery’s Tangerine Dreams did not disappoint. Bright in colour and flavour, with a light citrus sweetness balancing the expected sourness, it quenched my thirst without leaving a heavy belly or adding a heavy head the next day.

It’s often difficult to satisfy different preferences, but the limited-edition tangerine Berliner weisse absolutely fit the bill. We all agreed it had a perfect combination of sweet, tart, and fresh to satisfy everyone’s summer beer wants. Since I was drinking Powell’s Old Jalopy American pale ale all winter, it’s wonderful to have something equally delicious from the same brewery to match the season.

Summer Beer Sour to Compare

I’m so glad that I started stepping (sipping?) outside of my comfort zone in search of novel craft brews. Now I not only appreciate the availability of real fruit beers, I’ve discovered that’s just what I need to love sours.

What began as trying pale ales with a little fruit boost eventually led me to experimenting with Phillip’s stone fruit Dinosour. And that opened my mind to expanding my repertoire of non-pale ales made with real fruit. Still, while I love the almost pop-like flavour of Dinosour, it needs to be sipped slowly if you get heartburn easily. So for me it’s a once in a while drink.

Tangerine Dreams goes down like, well, like a dream. And at 4.3%, it’s not nearly as dangerous a summer beer when parched as it could be. It’s a refreshing wheaty beer, a light sour, and a fruit ale, and I cannot recommend it enough if any (or all) of those hit your palate well. I’m sure I’ll be writing about Powell’s sours again if I can find their Mango Madness before it’s sold out!
